If someone told you that you need to be online all the time in order to succeed while working remotely and to get promoted eventually, do not believe that. Becoming successful and getting promoted in remote working is not about staying online all the time.

Unlike working in an office where your boss first-hand witnesses the countless efforts you are putting in day-in, day-out, in remote working you can feel lost when conveying the correct message to your superiors.

Remote workers may experience a lack of visibility and connectivity, which can impact their chances of receiving promotions. This is often referred to as “out of sight, out of mind,” where the employees who are not physically present in the office may be overlooked for career advancement opportunities.

The process of getting promoted in a remote setup does not have to be a stressful journey if you get your practices straight. In my past experience, constantly keeping in touch with my superiors, providing updates on where things are, and helping colleagues whenever required paved the way to getting promoted.

The following list consists of strategies you can practice to get noted and promoted whilst enjoying the freedom of remote working.

Go beyond your way to help others

If you are comfortably sitting in your zone and doing only what you are told, nothing more and nothing less, you are giving a clear message that you are not interested in handling more responsibilities. Being able to handle more responsibilities is key to getting promoted

Keep your boss up to date

It is vital that your manager knows where you are with your task. Do not let them chase you for an update; instead, chase them and give them an update when suitable.

Take ownership; admit when you are wrong

Take charge of your tasks. It is also important to remember that you seek consensus with your team members. Nothing beats a well-oiled team and good teamwork. When you are wrong, be the first to admit it with a smile painted on your face.

Punctuality and dependability

I have always been the first to attend our meetings. If it’s at 9 o’clock, I make sure I am there by 8:59. Be the one when you are late by a few seconds; everyone starts noticing you. Because you are never late and were punctual for so long. The more you become punctual, the more you give a clear message that you are dependable. Everyone likes a dependable person.

Learn and share

Having a growth mindset is key to getting promoted. Constantly seek knowledge. If you are a developer, learn a new programming language or learn a new software design pattern. When you do learn, don’t forget to share with others, either by posting an article on social media or on your blog, or by simply telling your colleagues or manager. Everybody likes to listen to a new story. Why can’t that be the challenge you faced whilst learning that new thing?

Ask for it

Don’t shy away and brush it under the carpet. Sometimes it is more powerful when you ask for a promotion or salary increment during your 1:1 meeting with your boss. Ensure you can provide evidence to back your request and do a bit of market research to see where you fit. Either way, there is no harm in asking instead of sitting and daydreaming.
